Search Quay County Court Records
The main public search channel for Quay County court records is New Mexico Case Lookup. It is a statewide judiciary application, not a county-only portal. The first screen is a disclaimer with an accept button, and that disclaimer matters: use is limited to viewing individual electronic court records, bulk downloading is prohibited, and users are told to notify the court where the case was heard if the public data does not match the court file.
After the disclaimer, Case Lookup offers Name Search, Case Number Search, and DWI Search. It covers New Mexico Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, District Court, Magistrate Court, and limited Municipal Court data. For Quay County court records, the key location values are District Court "1010 - TUCUMCARI," Magistrate Court "40 - TUCUMCARI," Municipal Court "133 - TUCUMCARI," and a rendered San Jon municipal value of "137 - SAN JON." The public portal also notes that District and Magistrate Court data is updated daily and current within 24 hours of database entry. Cases filed before statewide court automation was completed in June 1997 may sit in a separate database depending on the court, so a missing old Quay County court record should be checked with the court directly.

Types of Quay County Court Records
Quay County court records are split by court and record type. The Tenth Judicial District Court is the general-jurisdiction trial court for Quay, De Baca, and Harding Counties, and it handles felony criminal cases, larger civil matters, divorce and domestic relations, juvenile jurisdiction, mental health matters, appeals, and contested probate. Quay County Magistrate Court handles misdemeanors, DWI/DUI, traffic violations, landlord-tenant matters, civil claims up to the lower-court limit, and felony preliminary hearings. Some public records that people expect to find in court systems are held elsewhere. The Quay County Clerk maintains county-recorded documents and marriage records. The Quay County Probate Judge handles informal probate and uncontested estate work, while contested estates go to District Court. Criminal arrest and custody records start with law enforcement or detention, but court charges and dispositions appear in the court case once filed.

That distinction matters in Quay County because a public case search can confirm the existence or status of a case while the filing court remains the path for official copies.
Public Access to Quay Court Records
New Mexico public access starts with the Inspection of Public Records Act. NMSA 1978, Section 14-2-1 states the general right to inspect public records unless an exception applies. For court records, public access also depends on court rules, redaction standards, sealing orders, and the court that maintains the file. The statewide judiciary IPRA process is the fallback for records not available through Case Lookup or a docket page.
New Mexico Courts IPRA requests require requester contact information and a reasonably particular description of the record. No reason for the request is required. In Quay County, that means a strong request names the court, case number if known, party names, approximate filing date, record type, and whether certified copies are needed. New Mexico Courts also states that it does not conduct criminal background checks for the public and does not maintain law-enforcement records, driver records, or marriage licenses.

Restricted Quay County Court Records
Several Quay County court record categories are restricted in public systems. Juvenile criminal cases are no longer displayed on Case Lookup as of July 1, 2007. Family Violence Protection Act order-of-protection cases are no longer displayed as of July 1, 2008. Social Security numbers, address information, and protected personal identifiers are not available through public Case Lookup. Adoption and mental health matters are also sensitive District Court categories and should not be treated as open public files without court confirmation.
Sealed records are limited by written court order or controlling law. Rule 1-079 NMRA says civil court records cannot be sealed merely by party agreement, and Rule 5-123 NMRA addresses public access and sealing in criminal proceedings. New Mexico's Criminal Record Expungement Act allows qualifying people to petition District Court to expunge certain arrest, non-conviction, conviction, and related records, but a missing public search result is not proof that a record was expunged.
